CBD oil is gaining a lot of public awareness these days. It’s no surprise; the list of possible benefits of CBD is long. According to recent studies, individuals are often using CBD to cope with chronic pain, arthritis, joint pain, anxiety, and other physical or psychical issues. Additionally, CBD is also well known to help with weight loss.
Even though we don’t know how frequent CBD oil is being used for weight loss, we know it’s a subject people are interested in and talking about. There are millions of results on Google and researchers are investigating.
CBD and weight loss
A study published in the Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry journal showed that CBD can turn white fat tissue (which stores energy) into beige fat tissue (which consumes it); This conversion is called “browning” and leads to:
- Reduction of obesity and other metabolic disorders
- Increase of whole-body calorie expenditure
- Decreased expression of proteins involved in fat storage in cells
The same study reveals that CBD can help increase animals’ glucose tolerance, making them more immune to diabetes or other blood lipid abnormalities. Promising for humans but still not proven.
Hemp oil contains CBD
For a long time “hemp oil” has been known, which is a natural hemp extract. It contains CBD and is excellent for cooking but it is not a smokable product. CBD is well known for its beneficial health and weight loss effects, most notably:
- Low calories – Hemp oil contains around 100 calories per tablespoon, compared to 120 calories in olive oil.
- Omega-3s – Hemp oil has a high amount of omega-three fatty acids which reduce the risk of heart disease and can reduce blood triglycerides.
- ALA – Hemp oil has a good amount of alpha-linolenic acid which has been shown to aid in weight gain prevention.
- Metabolism – The Journal of Nutrition published a study where the stimulation of lipid metabolism was detected.
Moreover, it is a very cheap oil in comparison to other omega-3 sources and tastes nice.
Why CBD oil?
The human body has an endocannabinoid system. It reacts to different substances by two cannabinoid receptors (CB), called receptor CB1 and CB2.
CB1 receptors reside mainly in the brain and central nervous system and are less appearing throughout the body. In comparison, CB2 receptors are mainly located in the body, especially in the immune and gastrointestinal system.
However, CB1 receptors are widespread in white fat depots. Because of this, researchers suspect there could be a link between CB1 receptor activation and obesity.
Loss of appetite
Most people believe in an increased appetite due to cannabis, as people who smoke cannabis seem to be more hungry than usual. Although it is true that the psychoactive ingredient of cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), can increase hunger, CBD does not. Many users believe the compound can help people to lose weight by actually decreasing appetite.
THC stimulates the body’s CB1 receptors, producing multiple symptoms, including an appetite stimulation. However, according to studies, the antagonists to the CB1 receptor may help to reduce appetite and control obesity. As an antagonist of CB1 receptors, the receptor is shut off or “deactivated”.
CBD does not deactivate CB1 receptors but does inhibit certain molecules. This can lead to a decrease of appetite and avoid overeating.
Another study showed a reduced appetite in rats through the usage of CBD. Even though there are lots of evidence indicating that CBD is effective to reduce appetite, no concrete experiments have been done to demonstrate a decreases appetite in humans due to CBD. Further studies are necessary.
CBD oil transforms bad fat into healthy fat
CBD supporters for weight reduction often say it can turn white, or “poor”, fat into brown fat, which will allow the body to increase its energy expenditure and therefore lose weight. White fat raises the likelihood of certain health diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, whereas brown fat regulates the body’s thermoregulation.
According to studies, CBD accomplishes many functions in how the body deals with food. CBD not only supports the conversion from white fat cells to brown fat cells but also encouraged the body to more quickly break down fats.
The researchers note that CBD could be an effective therapy for obesity prevention, but further research on humans are required.
